From Jönköping to Los Angeles: Hudoteket’s Journey as Global Innovators

As Sweden’s pioneering online beauty retailer, Hudoteket has spent 25 years blending expertise with innovation. In 2024, their dedication to education, customer care, and standout visibility earned them a place at the iS CLINICAL Global InnovatorProgram in Los Angeles. Editor Johan Magnusson sat down with COO Sandra Melin to hear how the experience deepened their passion for the brand—and why Fire & Ice remains their go-to glow treatment.

Five years ago, Hudoteket was looking for a new brand to offer to the customers, both in treatments and to bring home with them.

 Our CEO, Andrea Olofsson,had heard about iS Clinical and reached out to Noscomed, says Chief Operating Officer Sandra Melin. We sell the products both online—where everyone in the customer service is a skin therapist to provide the right help—and in our clinic in Jönköping, Sweden, where we also do treatments. Fire & Ice is very popular, and one of my favourite treatments as well. I have small children at home, and sometimes I can feel a bit dull and tired. It’s one treatment, not five ot six, and a very quick one with immediate results. It’s called a red carpet treatment for a reason: providing that instant glow. 

For someone who’s slightly new to iS Clinical, what are your top sellers?

Cleansing Complexor the Warming Honey Cleanser are both really good. The serums are very precise, and Hydra-Cool Serum is great for moist. A top product at Hudoteket is Pro-Heal Serum Advance+, the Vitamin C serum, which is really good, and the sunscreens are great, so now in the summer, we really like to recommend them.

 Are these your favourites as well?

 My current top three favourites is the immediately hydrating and glowing Reparative Moisture Emulsion. I’m a bit dry in the skin, which is making this a big thing in my bathroom. Cleansing Complex is my favourite cleansing of all time, and the Eclipse sunscreen is really, really good.

But in order to secure or maintain that summer glow, Fire & Ice is your go-to choice?

I really think so!, Melin states.

25 years ago, Hudoteket became the first to sell professional beauty online in Sweden. Today, the webshop is still open, and so are the salons in Jönköping and Malmö. Melin and her colleagues have even more things to celebrate than a 25th anniversary as a leading Swedish beauty player online. 

 Melin: 2024 was a really good year for us, and iS Clinical has grown a lot over the last years.

Thanks to the impressive sales numbers and great visibility for the brand in its own social media channels, Hudoteket was selected by Noscomed for the iS Clinical Global Innovator Program, securing two tickets to the event in Los Angeles just the other week.

– I was chosen by the company to go, together with Sofie who’s a skin therapist and head of our costumer service. It was a big honour to go, and we had a lot of fun on that trip!

 

What did you get to do?

 We had a lot of inspiring meetings. First with co-founders Alec Call and Bryan Johns, and Clinical Doctor Charlene De Haven. We also met the international iS Clinical team, Richard and Pauline from the Noscomed team, a Belgian clinic that is connected to Noscomed, and clinics from Guatemala, Canada, Switzerland, Australia, and other countries. The whole world was there! says Melin.

 

It’s gotta be such a fun experience also, to meet salons from many other countries.

 Yes! In Sweden, we have a lot of problems with sensitive and dry skin. Then, we met people from Australia, where pigmentation is a big thing. It was both good and meaningful to hear what skin problems are the focus in other parts of the world.

 

When meeting Bryan and Alec, it’s easy to get struck by their warm personalities. Do you agree?

 Yes. I had never met them before, we didn’t know beforehand how much we would get to see them, but they were with us the whole time and took such good care of us. They were absolutely wonderful – so inclusive and so welcoming. ’Oh, that’s the Swedish team,’ they said immediately when we met—I think they might have seen our pictures—and welcomed us with hugs.

 The people who work there, in the headquarters and the warehouse, are also very included in the iS Clinical ’family’, which was really good to see. We often talk about that ourselves, about the Hudoteket family. It’s a big thing for us, as a family company, and we felt the same thing at iS Clinical.

 You get another passion for the brand when you meet the founders. And, they have such passion for their brand, when they talk about the product down to the single packaging. You also really see how many hours it is behind every product. In the lab and in the warehouse, they are packing all the products and doing everything else by hand. No robots. We also have a big warehouse in Sweden, where we also pack our products and orders for our customers ourselves, so it felt a bit similar.

 

You mentioned your recent success with iS Clinical. Is that much thanks to your skin therapists?

 Absolutely! We have skin therapists both in our customer service and at our clinics, and they all have education in iS Clinical. For us, it’s very important that it’s safe for our customers to know that we don’t recommend anything that we don’t know about. Education is very important. Thankfully, iS Clinical also has a very good education page for our skin therapists, including webinars, to make everyone feel comfortable recommending the products. 

The products are very effective and easy to understand. They have very good ingredients that are very safe, and they give very good results. is Clinical is growing in Sweden, and many people are finding their new favourites.

 

What’s next for Hudoteket?

 We celebrate 25 years online this summer, releasing our special Celebration Box now, and with a lot of other celebrations coming in the fall. In Sweden, we’re quite well-known for our Christmas Calendar, which we will include in the 25th anniversary as well. It’s a really good Christmas Calendar this year—I know, because I’m in charge of it—which you can look forward to in October, Melin concludes.
